The viral hepatitis is one of the leading causes of acute and chronic liver disease in Pakistan resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. The epidemic of hepatitis A and E are very common during rainy season and even all over the year due to poor hygienic and sanitary conditions. Hepatitis B and C are the common causes of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma causing great burden on health care system and financial resources of the country. Keeping these facts in consideration, different societies, academic groups, government and non-government organizations were highlighting this issue in different forums. On 8 th May 2003 First National Conference on Serious Health Hazards was held in Islamabad. Eight NGOs participated in this conference. Executive council of Pakistan Society of Hepatology and Rawalians’ Research Forum were invited by the organizers to address the issue of hepatitis in relation to prevention and management strategies. Guidelines were prepared for this national conference and subsequently presented in Consultative Group Meeting of Experts on Hepatitis on 11 th June 2003 at Holiday Inn Hotel in Islamabad. It is a very humble effort of reviewing the different international guidelines on hepatitis A, B, C and E. |
